Rules For Name Submission
Rule of Thumb: follow the example of how other names and titles are entered.
Official Rules: SURNAME BOX: 1. Type surname in all CAPS. 2. Type name prefixes in all CAPS. Examples: von Clauswitz - VON CLAUSWITZ. bin Laden - BIN LADEN del Bosqe - DEL BOSQE 3. Leave space between prefix and name. 4. In countries where surnames are written first, type in the surname in the "Surname" box. Example: KIM Jong-Il. KIM is the surname. 5. Include alternate name spellings in the title box. Use parenthesis as in the example below. Example: Moammar GHADAFI (altspl: Mu’amar AL KADAFI) 6. NSC allows a maximum of three alternate spellings. 7. In some cultures both paternal and maternal surnames are written. If appropriate separate with hyyphen. Type both names in all CAPS. GIVEN NAME BOX: 1. Type given name in upper and lower case. 2. For persons who prefer an initial for their given name, type the initial and period in the given name box. 3. If more than one spelling is used for a given name follow rule #5 under "surname" rules. MIDDLE NAME(S) BOX: 1. For middle names use upper and lower case. 2. Include all other middle names in the middle name box. 3. If more than one spelling is used for a middle name, follow rule #5 under "surname" rules. TITLE BOX: l. Use NameSpellChecker title abbreviations from the abbreviations list. Full spellings are also acceptable. 2. If an abbreviation is not listed on the NameSpellChecker abbreviation list, do not use abbreviations for either titles or words identifying the individual. 3. Capitalize only proper titles. 4. Include an individual’s title first, followed by the country. Example: President, USA Prime Minister, Australia 5. In cases where titles are a description of a person’s involvement in a news story, keep the identification to as few words as possible. Example: DOE, John, (Title Box) alleged embezzler 6. In cases of crime or court proceedings, use alleged or accused in identifying a person unless the person is convicted by a court of law. Example: JAMES, Jesse, (Title Box) convicted bank robber JUAN, Don, (Title Box) alleged philanderer NSC reserves the right to reject or rename politicized descriptions of individuals, organizations or groups. |
